在使燃料能完全燃燒的情況下希望空氣過剩系數越低越好。但過低可能造成燃燒不完全，而過高將增加了爐內空氣量，降低爐子的熱效率，對于強制通風或引風，還將增加動力消耗，煙氣中的氧含量過多也將增加對爐管和其他部件的損失。
