在使燃料能完全燃燒的情況下希望空氣過剩系數(shù)越低越好。但過低可能造成燃燒不完全，而過高將增加了爐內(nèi)空氣量，降低爐子的熱效率，對于強(qiáng)制通風(fēng)或引風(fēng)，還將增加動力消耗，煙氣中的氧含量過多也將增加對爐管和其他部件的損失。

靠爐底或水冷金屬梁的上升、前進(jìn)、下降、后退的動作把料坯一步一步地移送前進(jìn)的連續(xù)加熱爐。爐子有固定爐底和步進(jìn)爐底，或者有固定梁和步進(jìn)梁。
